Edible Main Street

Norway, Maine

Main Street Norway now has sixteen planter boxes full of a variety of edible plantings during the growing season. Healthy Oxford Hills received a generous grant from the Stephen’s Community Healthcare Foundation last year to place container gardens along Main Street. We have teamed up with the Alan Day Community Garden, Healthy Oxford Hills and Norway Downtown on the project to build and maintain planters. We consider this a pilot project and continue to expand it based on what we learn each year. This project has been one of our most recognized and successful since making it's way down Main Street in early May 2015.

The planters are filled with straw bales that have been soaked in compost tea, then covered with a layer of compost. The idea is that the straw will act as a sponge, thus eliminating the need for constant watering, be heavy enough to anchor the planters, and feed the plants throughout the season as they break down. Despite the harsh wind and frequent sunny conditions this idea has been working well.
